How To Work At Home
You want to learn how to work at home and find financial freedom? Then bookmark this page right now and keep reading. I’ll tell you how I’m doing it. And guess what? All you need is a computer and access to the internet and you can start doing it today too – at no cost.
I’m currently making around $2500 per month working part time from my home blogging and that amount is going up a little every month. I started my home job about eighteen months ago. My wife and I still work our day jobs, but are paying off our mortgage fast. When it’s paid off we are quitting our day jobs.
People are always wondering how to work at home; either convince their employer to allow them to work from home, or to actually find a job they can do themselves from home. Personally I would rather not have to work for anybody but myself. My wife and I are working towards that goal, and soon we hope to make a full transition from working for our employers to working for ourselves.
This blog is about my journey figuring out how to work at home. Perhaps in reading it you will answer some questions you may have. It may also help move you one step closer towards your goals for being able to start a home business as a blogger, just like I did.
How To Work At Home – Build A Solid Foundation
Being able to work at home is usually a long process in the making if you want to work for yourself and be successful. You need to find a job that you can do on your own and make enough income to support yourself and your family (if you have one). It sounds like a big task, and it can be if you don’t where to start. But that was my exact goal. I didn’t want to be working a day job and a second job at home. I wanted to work only one job and to be the boss of me.
Finding self employment work is easy. I previously blogged about five interesting work for yourself type jobs that I researched. However, building up your business once you figure out want you want to do is going to take time.
Learning how to work at home means building a home business with a solid foundation. You need to make sure your new business isn’t going to crumble and leave you desperate and looking for regular employment once again should it fail.
You shouldn’t quit your regular job anytime soon. But it can easily be a goal to set for yourself. Working for yourself is more than likely going to require a slow transition from day job to home job.
You will more than likely be building up your at home business in the spare time you have around your day job and family life. The more time you have to focus towards your new website business the faster it will take off and the sooner it can support you with extra income.
That’s what my wife and I have been doing for little more than a year now. Our blogging websites have worked out well. But like any legitimate home business it has taken time to build.
Picking The Job That Fits Your Needs
Before settling in on a job that I could start at home I first did a fair amount of research. I had to first ask myself why I wanted to be my own boss, why I wanted to work from a home office and not an employer’s office, and what I wanted to accomplish in working for myself.
‘Time’ was a reoccurring answer for most of my questions. I wanted to find an at home job were I could work less and have more time for my family. I wanted to be able to stop wasting time commuting to and from work. I wanted to be able to have a job I could easily take with me when I travel or if I decide to move to another part of the country. Time and Freedom.
The more I thought about the ‘freedom’ aspect of working for myself, the more I needed to pay attention to the kind of job I would be able to start from home. If I wanted to travel and not let my home business dwindle away, I would would need to find a particular job that could fit that situation where I could work at it even when I wasn’t at home.
If I wanted to up and move to another part of the country, I would also want to pick a job that I could bring with me without worry of having to rebuild it at another location. That aspect pretty much cancelled out picking a home based job that required I provide a physical service, like photography or landscape specialist.
Just like I did, you too need to decide what you want to do if you start a work at home job.
Work At Home For Yourself – Get A Website, It’s EASY!
Everywhere I looked online people were building their own home businesses using websites. Even if the website was not the sole focus of their income, even if it was just used as a means to get found online that would lead people to them and their skill (perhaps a photography business, or voice acting business), everybody who was serious about working at home had their own website.
Because I wanted to be able to travel and maybe even move some day, I wasn’t looking for a job that was going to generate me an income based on working within the local community. I wanted something national that I could do from a laptop from anywhere there is a WiFi connection.
In my research I noticed that a lot of people were buying anything and everything online. I wondered if there was a way to tap into that. And there was!
If you really want to know how to work at home you need to start thinking about getting yourself a website. There are over 3.7 billion people in the world with access to high speed internet, and that number is rising quickly. Online consumer shopping has increased every year since 1997.
Here are some interesting facts:
- 2015 online sales reached $335 billion dollars in the United States alone.
- In 2016 the internet giant, Amazon, captured 53% of all online sales.
- BY 2020 inline sales is estimated to be at $523 billion in the Unites State alone.
As you can see online sales are growing quickly, and are expected to keep growing. If you get yourself a website you can tap into some of that money exchanging hands on the internet.
Of course I am talking about Affiliate Marketing. This web page is mostly dedicated to helping people learn how to work from home for themselves as bloggers and monetizing their websites to earn an income as affiliate marketers. I am doing exactly that with my various websites, and I’m very close to achieving my work at home dream. I wanted to share my success and encourage more people they can do the same with Earn Your Success.
How To Work At Home Doing Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is basically blogging about an interest you have. Most interests are associated with a product of some sort. When you blog about your hobbies or interests you include a few pages on your blog with product reviews. You link those product reviews to places like Amazon. When people searching the internet find your page, read your review and click over to Amazon to buy the product, you get a commission.
If that same person buys other items on their Amazon visit, or goes back within 24 hours and buys more items, you would also get commissions on those items they buy as well.
It’s pretty easy. Easier than people think. You have no overhead, just your computer and an internet connection. Setting up a website and blogging has never been more simple. If you can learn how to drive a car and navigate around your smart phone, you can easily build a website.
Building Up An Affiliate Marketing Website
From the day I started my first blogging website, (about backpacks), I was in business for myself, working for myself and towards a better future for my family. Starting a website was the easy part. Building up that website with content took some time and effort.
Let’s face it, what I had started to do was in fact work. However, it was a lot of fun! So I don’t even know if I would call it work. It was exciting to be working for myself on my own home business.
Learning how to work at home for me involved learning a new skill set. I had to learn about websites, adding content to them, adding pictures to them, learn how to get them noticed in search engines like Google, learn about social media and linking my web pages to social media accounts.
I knew it was going to take some work, but it was fun and I was actually excited to be doing it. As soon as I created that first website I became an entrepreneur. I was working towards a goal, and I was creating a website around hiking, backpack camping, and the backpacks I like to use when I go hiking and camping.
I picked a hobby of mine that I now get to write about and share stories and talk about my gear. Imagine being able to work from home doing something you love? If I couldn’t be out camping or hiking, why not blog about it? Luckily creating a website and building it was easy to learn.
Starting a website is easy… Check out the video below that I made, it shows you how easy it is to create a website from scratch, in just a few minutes!
However, building up a website to make an income takes some time. The search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo don’t like ‘new’ websites. New websites have a low trust rating. To build up trust and to get noticed by those search engines you have to keep adding good content and let time pass as the site matures.
I knew that it was going to take time building up website trust when I started. I knew I wasn’t going to start seeing money come in right away, that it could take a few months or longer before people were finding my web page.
That was the hardest part of starting an affiliate marketing website. You put a lot of work into adding content that people are not seeing, yet you have to keep doing it despite the fact it’s not being seen, because if you stop your site stops gaining trust and authority.
You have to keep working for that goal and moving yourself forward.
During the early phases of my first website my wife worked hard on promoting us through social media, and it helped. While people were not finding us through internet searches, we were getting noticed through our social media outreach on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. A few months into our first website we started making some commissions.
About two months after starting our first website I added another one and focused on a product my wife and I both love; beds! We love getting a good nights rest, and knew something about various beds so we decided it would be easy to blog about. So just as the first website was starting to get some traction, we added a second one.
Why did we add a second website? Well, it is certainly possible a single niche website can grow enough to earn an income for a person or family to live off of. I know a few people who have great niche websites like that, but most of the people I network with that do this type of work from home have a handful of websites.
Why put all your eggs in one basket? Diversify! It creates a safety net, and I am all about playing it safe. It also helped build a good foundation for our at home business.
How To Work At Home – Motivation Can Be A Struggle
The first month while I was learning how to work at home building up a niche website was a lot of fun. I was learning some new things and seeing a web page I created come alive. It was an exciting time. I was building an at home business! I was an entrepreneur!
However, by month two and three it was a little frustrating because I had a great website that looked awesome, but people were not finding it. I wasn’t getting much traffic to it outside social media links my wife had built around it.
Motivation becomes a small factor when starting out after the initial excitement wears down. Between the second month and the sixth month was a real difficult time because I was in unknown territory. Wasn’t this going to work, was it not going to work? That is what I kept asking myself. I had nobody to go to and mentor me through the slow times.
Learning how to work at home was easy. Motivation was hard to find sometimes. Especially when some self doubt starts kicking in! But it gets better, much better… keep reading!
I would look back at all the the work being put into the two web pages and not be seeing much activity, at least not enough to make me think I was going to be able to quit my day job. Some money was coming in, enough to have some nice spending cash here and there, but things needed to get better. A little extra cash to help with the bills was nice, but it wasn’t enough. I started this to be able to become my own boss full time.
During these months, particularly around the fourth to sixth month I was feeling burnt out. I was working my day job, coming home and working a couple hours on the web pages, seeing low activity, and wondering if I was ever going to be able to quit that day job. Figuring out how to work at home was easy, staying motivated at this point was not easy.
You have to keep at it. Don’t stop. The time and work will pay off. I kept pushing myself! I kept blogging and kept adding content to those websites.
To add to the frustration I was feeling I had discovered I had done a few things wrong when building up my websites. In order to get your pages noticed you need to know a little about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I didn’t know much about it, and I was figuring out that my blog posts were not getting easily found by the search engines like I had hoped they would.
If you want to make money online your websites need to get found by people. That means they need to rank high with Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The higher up in the search results you appear, the more money you are going to make. Page two is okay… but page one is were you want to be.
So I was facing the prospect of having to redesign and rewrite a few things on both of the websites. It was a sort of nightmare and I wasn’t sure how to start doing it.
This was about the time I came across a website called Wealthy Affiliate that had a free training program for affiliate marketer beginners that showed people how to create niche blogging websites for earning a revenue. I created an account with them and started taking their free basic training program teaching people how to work at home as bloggers. It wasn’t easy to admit at first, but I learned a lot about what I was doing wrong.
It was the best thing I did for myself and my home business.
To this day I am grateful I came across Wealthy Affiliate. It gave me some well needed support where I met other people going through exactly what I was doing. I found the support I needed to answer questions I had. I found not one mentor, but many mentors.

I really wish I had come across them sooner. I would be much further along than I am now.
It Started Getting Better!
About a month after I did some work to improve my web pages (thanks to Wealthy Affiliate’s free starter training) I started seeing some nice results. My websites were getting noticed by Google and people were finding my blog posts much more easily. And that is when the monthly commissions started increasing more and more every month.
I wish I had come across Wealthy Affiliate sooner, because learning how to work at home on my own resulted in some wrong turns. If I had found them sooner I would probably be about five months further along than where I am right now. My wife may already be able to quit here job.
I wonder how much sooner I could have been generating good income had I not made the errors on content and SEO that I made. Oh well, live and learn.
It was around January and February 2017 that I knew my quest to learn how to work at home was going to pay off. On average I was putting about five to six hours a week into each web page adding more content and tweaking past posts I had written. Most of the work being done at this point is just upkeep on our two primary sites.
A few months ago we added a third site and have been building that up as well. I suspect in another month my wife and I will be adding a fourth site that focuses on a hobby she has; either sewing and crafting or essential oils. She’s into that stuff and knows a lot about both, so writing her own blog should be easy for her.
My plan is to have 2-3 good sites that generate the income my wife and I get from our combined day jobs, and then add in a couple more sites on top of that as a safety net.
