How To Make Money Writing Product Reviews
Have you ever purchased something online through a retailer after reading a product review online? I do it all the time. In fact more and more people are buying online than ever before.
Trends show that online shopping is going to continue to grow. Amazon last year in 2016 captured 53% of all online sales that took place. Imagine being able to tap into that.
There is a lot of money moving between consumers and online retailers. I make a nice income in my spare time writing product reviews working at home. Doing so allows me to capture a percentage of that money that is moving online. If you are wondering how to make money writing product reviews, I can help explain it.
How To Make Money Writing Product Reviews – How Does It Work?
In order to write product reviews online you need to have a website. Getting one is pretty easy, setting one up to write product reviews is also a minor matter. You can have a website of your own within a few minutes. I’ll show you where you can do that further below.
On your website you write product reviews and provide a link to an online retailer where people can buy the items you are reviewing.
People find your website by doing searches in Google, Bing and Yahoo. They are looking for reviews for the items you write about because they are thinking about making a purchase and want another consumer’s opinion.
When they read your review on an item and decide they want to buy it, they will click on the link to the online retailer you provide. When they buy that item you will earn a sales commission.
People can make enough money doing this to help supplement their incomes, other’s do it full-time working from home and make a very good living. Many bloggers do this to earn an income from their websites.
What I just explained above is the basics of how you can make money writing product reviews. If you are seriously thinking this could be something you would like to do you need a game plan:
- Choose a niche or item to write a review on.
- Get a website that you can write your review or reviews on.
- You want to learn how to write a good review. There are right and wrongs ways to do this.
- Learn how to get visitors to your website.
- Make money from your reviews!
Keep reading, because I am going to touch on each bullet point above with a little more detail, and then I’ll help you get started doing this at no out of pocket cost.
Choosing An Item Or Niche To Review
To be honest with you, darn near anything item you can think of is going to be one you can make money from writing about. Online retailers like Amazon, Target, Walmart, Macy’s… any online retailer is 95% likely to have what is called an ‘affiliate program’.
Online retailers love having people online write reviews of products and then provide links for potential consumers to follow to their sites – where they can buy the items. They pay you to send consumers to their site when they buy stuff.
Guess how much it costs to sign up for an online affiliate program? NOTHING. Online retailers like Amazon don’t charge anything for you to work for them sending consumes to their site.
So you need to find a product or niche to review. If an item comes to mind, like a TV, or sauna, a crockpot, a guitar, makeup, jewelry, shoes…anything… check and see if there is an online retailer that sells. If they do, see if they have an affiliate program you can sign up with.
- Think of a product or niche and see if Amazon, or another online retailer sells it.
- If they do, see if they have an affiliate program you can sign up with. Most online retailers do.
Finding out if an online retailer has an affiliate program is easy. Just do a Google search by using their company name and add ‘affiliate program’ to the search term. Odds are a result is going to pop up that indicates they have such a program.
When you sign up as an affiliate with an online retailer you are able to get ‘special links’ to the product you want to review. Those links are specific and uniquely linked to your affiliate account, and are what get used to track your sales you push towards the retailer.
When starting out trying to write product reviews to earn money I highly suggest you pick a product or a niche theme of products that you are highly familiar with. Doing so makes writing reviews so much more easier, and actually enjoyable.
Get Yourself A Website To Write Your Reviews On
Making money writing product reviews isn’t going to work unless you have the number tool needed to do it; a website. Sure, you need a computer and internet connection, but most people and family homes have these already. The website is the thing you post your reviews on, and you need one.
Building a website is not all that complex. It’s actually pretty easy in this current day and age we live in. If you can point and click a mouse and type a little, you can have a website of your own up and running in about five minutes. Yeah, it’s that easy.
You can even get a website for free, two of them in fact, and free web hosting at a place called Wealthy Affiliate. All you need to do is create an account with them using an email address and BAM… they give you access to two free website and free hosting.

Learn To Write A Good Product Review Online
Like I said above, there is a good way and a wrong way to write product reviews. Doing it the right way is going to convert into more potential people clicking through from your site to the retailers site. You want that to happen, because that majorly increases your chances of making money.
Oddly enough, many people tend to browse quickly through reviews they are reading online. So there is a format that many online reviewers use when writing product reviews. The intent of the review format puts vital information in front of the consumer fast.
Here is an example:
- PRODUCT: (product name)
- PRICE: (best price)
- CHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY: (online retailer name and link to product)
- GUARANTEES: (any warranty info?)
- RATING: (how do you rate it? 4/5 stars? Thumbs up?)
The layout you see above is best placed at the top of the review. Make is easy to find, with short text after each prompt. After that information is provided you will need to write a review. Usually the best way to do that is to follow with similar headings as seen below:
- Product Overview: Write a few paragraphs about the overall product.
- Best Feature(s): What do you like best about the product you are reviewing, and why.
- Pro’s: What makes the product so great that you would recommend people buy it.
- Con’s: Write about anything you don’t like about the product.
- Conclusion: Write a brief conclusion of everything above, and once again provide a link where the consumer can click and go buy the product.
The headings you see above are similar to the headings I created on this web post to break up content that I am writing about and sharing with you.
When writing a review you want to be authentic. Write in a simple manner and be forthcoming. Consumers respond and absorb such information. Providing them with a real world experience you have with the item being reviewed goes a long way too.
One of the nice things about creating an account with Wealthy Affiliate above, is that they provide some free training on how to write great product reviews.
Getting Visitors To Your Website
Once you have an idea for a product review, and have your website, and have written some product reviews and supporting content, you need to get visitors to your website. This is one of the more important things you will need to learn when figuring out how to make money online writing product reviews.
People who are looking for online reviews will usually use specific keywords when they type into the search engine what they are looking for. Word like “best” or “review”. Such as “Yeti 30oz tumbler review”, or “Best coffee Tumbler”.
It’s usually a good idea to use such key word phrases within the content of the review you are writing. Google, and the other big name search engines crawl websites and search for keyword phrases the help them identify which websites to show when people do searches.
Each review you write should have the following:
- A keyword phrase somewhere in the page/post title
- The keyword someplace in the first two paragraphs of your review content
- After that write your content naturally and don’t focus on the keyword phrase.
Another good idea to get your website found is to share your content on social medial sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and others you may be familiar with.
Making Money From Your Reviews
Sure, you can write one review and see what happens. Eventually you will make some money from it, not a lot, but some. However, writing several reviews and creating a ‘niche’ website where you focus on several products within a related field is going to make you much more money.
Why is that? Because a niche website with good content and lots of information becomes what is called an ‘authority site’. Google likes authority sites and is more likely to put your website in front of people when they do searches for the things you review.
When you follow the basic steps above and write a variety of reviews within a niche you will see more and more commissions come in. That is how you make money writing product reviews.
